Maharashtra recalls controversial sedition circular

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday told the Bombay High Court that it has withdrawn its controversial circular on sedition.

Advocate General Shrihari Aney informed a division bench of Justices V.M. Kanade and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi.

In light of the government's statement, the court disposed of petitions challenging the circular filed by cartoonist Aseem Trivedi,

>who was arrested in 2012 on the charge of sedition under section 124 A of the Indian Penal Code for his political cartoons.The court gave Mr. Trivedi and another petitioner Narendra Sharma the liberty to file fresh pleas on the suggestions they had submitted.
