Mumbai: Deprived of his daily cocktail of drugs, an undertrial at Taloja Jail died on Monday after being admitted to JJ Hospital with withdrawal symptoms. Police said Parabjeetsingh Darasingh Gakhal, 50, was a drug pedlar who was addicted to the drugs he sold. On January 29, Gakhal was arrested by Kalamboli police with drugs worth Rs. 2.63 lakh in his possession and charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for selling drugs.
An officer with Kharghar police said, “He was not getting his regular dose of drugs in jail. This led to his ill-health.” On February 7, Gakhal was admitted to the jail hospital and was undergoing treatment. “He had multiple substance abuse withdrawal symptoms and would turn violent in the cell as he had no access to the drugs. Shivering, saying unrelated things and turning violent were some of the symptoms,” Vilas Bhoite, Senior Jailer, Taloja Jail, said.
Gakhal was taken for treatment to JJ Hospital twice in February. When he was taken there on Sunday,Ddoctors at JJ Hospital said there was no change in his condition. As per protocol, we informed Kharghar police about it and a accidental death case has been registered with them,” Mr. Bhoite said.
