IMD warns of heavy rain for four days

Weatherman attributes showers to air cyclonic circulation over Arabian Sea; BMC says no special warning for city

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in isolated places in north and south Konkan, and Mumbai till September 20.

The north-central and south-central regions of the State are also likely to see heavy showers. The IMD has also forecast that thundershowers are likely to occur in all these regions.

Earlier this week, Mumbai saw thunderstorm and widespread rain. On September 15, 64 mm rain was recorded in Santacruz observatory and 37 mm in Colaba observatory.

S.G. Kambale, an IMD scientist, said, “The upper air cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea will cause the heavy rain.”

However, he made it clear that no specific threat to Mumbai is forecast. “This rainfall is widespread. A few isolated places may witness heavy rain.”

Mahesh Narvekar, chief officer at disaster management cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, said no special warning has been issued for the city. “The IMD has forecast regular rain, and isolated areas may witness heavy to very heavy showers. As of now, we have not been notified with an alert.”
