A history-sheeter arrested by the Crime Branch in an extortion case registered with the Nhava Sheva police has landed himself in trouble again by intimidating police officers while in custody.

Nilesh Deshmukh was nabbed on November 6 and handed over to the Nhava Sheva police. But due to the lack of a lock-up at Nhava Sheva police station, the accused was kept in the lock-up of the Uran police, the nearest one.
On Saturday, when most of the police officers were busy with bandobast owing to the Ayodhya verdict, a man who claimed to be Mr. Deshmukh’s friend went to Uran police station with some tea and wanted to give it to Mr. Deshmukh. Police sub-inspector Vijay Kolekar, who was the duty officer, asked the person to first drink some tea himself to check if it was safe.
Mr. Kolekar then asked him to hand over the tea to a constable and that he would not be allowed to meet Mr. Deshmukh for security reasons. When Mr. Deshmukh learnt about it, he started shouting and abusing police officials following which they informed senior police inspector Jagdish Kulkarni, who was on bandobast duty.

Mr. Kulkarni tried to pacify Mr. Deshmukh, but he abused and intimidated Mr. Kulkarni as well and said he could not order him as he was not under his custody but that of the Nhava Sheva police. Mr. Deshmukh also threatened to harm himself in the lock-up.
“We registered a case against him at Uran police station. On Monday, the custody of the Nhava Sheva police got over in the extortion case and now we have taken his custody,” Mr. Kulkarni said.
The Uran police booked Mr. Deshmukh and arrested him under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
