Azad Maidan police have booked two private guards deployed in the subway near Metro Cinemas for damaging CCTV camera monitors installed in the subway during a fight on July 16.
The police said Medu Veerchandra Thakur (32) and Madhukar Subhash Kumar (20), employed by Eagle Security, started fighting over a petty issue in the cabin near the subway’s entrance, where the CCTV feed is viewed. Mr. Thakur sustained a head injury and Mr. Kumar ended up with a broken nose.
Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, A Ward, said, “The BMC had not been informed about the fight or the broken equipment. We had increased security in the subway and installed cameras after receiving complaints from women and the principal of St. Xavier’s College.”

The BMC learnt about the incident only on Wednesday and filed a complaint at Azad Maidan police station. The police then booked Mr. Kumar and Mr. Thakur for damaging public property, creating public nuisance and endangering the life and personal safety of others under the Indian Penal Code.
The accused were discharged from GT Hospital on Wednesday after being treated for injuries. They were arrested on Thursday and remanded in police custody till Friday.
Police Sub Inspector Jayesh Kulkarni, Azad Maidan police station, said, “We are still investigating the exact sequence of events leading to the monitor being broken. Both the accused are being interrogated and the CCTV feed of the cabin is being monitored.”
