Mumbai: Gold jewellery worth over ₹50 lakh was stolen from a jewellery shop in Nerul on Monday morning. The accused, who were staying in a one-room kitchen apartment behind the shop, entered the showroom after drilling through the common wall.
Gopal Singh Kannan Singh Sadana (27), owner of Mayura jewellers at Vighnaharta Sadan at Sector 23 in Darave village, learnt about the theft when he opened the shop. The theft is suspected to have happened between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m.
“Prima facie, the two suspects had come to stay in the apartment two days ago. The owner of the chawl does not have any information about his tenants, nor their mobile numbers,” said assistant police inspector Rajesh Gajjal from Nerul police station.

According to the police, the accused, after drilling a hole, used a gas cutter to open the locker and stole 1.5 kg gold ornaments worth ₹42.75 lakh and ₹8.14 lakh worth gold articles of customers, who had given those for repairing.
“The accused would have managed to drill in around two hours. They have also made away with the hard disk of the CCTV camera,” said Mr. Gajjal.
A case has been registered under Sections 454, 457, 380, and 34 of the IPC.
