Two JNPT containers gutted, departmental inquiry ordered

A fire on a goods train gutted two JNPT containers on Thursday night near Dahanu Road, leading to several trains being cancelled and services being affected on Friday morning.

The incident occurred around 10.35 p.m. on Thursday on the Up line, towards Mumbai, between Dahanu Road and Vangaon station. According to railway officials, while fire engines were despatched to the site, they could not reach the spot quickly because of the muddy approach to the tracks.

The fire escalated to the point that the overhead equipment (OHE) melted leading to a complete disruption of services in that section. However, no casualties were reported. A departmental inquiry has been ordered by the General Manager of Western Railway (WR).

WR managed to restore the Down line, towards Gujarat, by 1.35 a.m. on Friday but with speed restrictions at the site of the incident. The Up line was restored only by 9.10 a.m. on Friday.

Seven trains were diverted while 10, including the Mumbai-Surat Flying Ranee, were cancelled. Suburban services in the morning were operated till Boisar, before the Up line was made operational. An additional 13 long-distance trains were short-terminated.
