Eman’s sister refuses to apologise to Saifee docs

Turns down BJP leader Shaina NC’s suggestion to do so

Eman Ahmed now weighs around 176 kg.

A day after BJP leader Shaina NC met Egyptian national Eman Ahmed and asked her sister Shaimaa Selim to tender an apology to Saifee Hospital doctors for her disparaging comments against them, Ms. Selim has flatly refused to do so. Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, she said she hasn’t been making up stories or lying. “There is no reason why I should apologise to anyone.”

On February 11, Ms. Ahmed, then reportedly weighing 500 kg, was airlifted from Alexandria and brought to Mumbai for weight loss surgery. As of today, her weight is around 176 kg. “That is a huge change. Our doctors have done so much for her. There is no reason why they should face criticism for all the good work they have done,” Ms. Shaina said. She asked Ms. Selim to go beyond an apology and compliment doctors for their work.

Indians from across the world have contributed through a crowdfunding initiative started for Ms. Ahmed, from lakhs of rupees to ₹500, a Bible to bless her and an Arabic translator at no cost. “In return, what we have got is ungratefulness. Her sister has been extremely thankless,” Ms. Shaina said.

Doctors at Saifee Hospital were unclear on when Ms. Ahmed will leave for Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi, which is known to offer five star amenities and has stepped in to take over her treatment. Interestingly, bariatric surgeon Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala was to operate on Ms. Ahmed at the Abu Dhabi hospital before Saifee Hospital stepped into the picture and she was flown in to Mumbai.

“All I expected from them is to keep my sister till she is completely fit. But Saifee Hospital decided to discharge her hurriedly,” Ms. Selim said, adding the Burjeel Hospital team has promised to keep her sister till she is fit, and for at least a year.
