Mumbai: Mustafa Dossa was taken to the hospital twice on Tuesday night by Arthur Road jail authorities, sources said. The first time was around 12.30 a.m., and he was sent back to jail after basic symptomatic treatment.
When his condition worsened, he was brought back to the hospital around 3.30 a.m. and was admitted to jail ward. Hospital sources said there are two Emergency Patient Registrations (EPRs) in Dossa’s name. A doctor pointed out that Dossa’s condition was extremely critical by the time he was admitted. The hospital had carried out all routine tests for acute febrile illnesses like dengue, malaria and infections.
Dr. T.P. Lahane, dean, JJ Hospital, denied this, saying, “[Dossa] was brought in only once. But because of the admission in the jail ward, there seems to be some confusion.” He said Dossa was brought in at 12.30 a.m. with high grade fever and admitted under the medicine department in the jail ward.

“He had 102 fever. He was also diagnosed with a chest infection and a urinary tract infection,” he said, adding Dossa was shifted to the Critical Care Unit at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday after his condition worsened. “He was on ventilator. Our doctors tried to revive him for over two hours, but he succumbed at 2.30 p.m.”
A team from the hospital’s cardiac department was also monitoring Dossa’s condition as he was a long time heart patient. He had undergone a heart procedure about 15 years ago after a heart attack. He also suffered from hypertension and diabetes.
