A Special CBI Court has convicted former Income Tax Commissioner, Mumbai, Ashok Purwar and his wife Chhaya in a 2001 disproportionate assets case. The 1971-batch Indian Revenue Service officer and his wife were last week convicted for offences punishable under section 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and under section 109 of Indian Penal Code.
Mr. Purwar was sentenced to three years simple imprisonment and fined Rs. 1 lakh, while Special Judge RN Joshi sentenced his wife Chhaya to two years simple imprisonment and fined Rs. 50,000. The conviction happened on May 8, a CBI statement said.
The anti-corruption wing of the CBI, Mumbai, had registered a case of disproportionate assets against the couple on December 3, 2001. According to the registered FIR, the public servant was prima facie found to have disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs. 2.28 crores or about 400 per cent higher than his known sources of income. The couple also owned flats at Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore and a plot in Agra, investigations showed. They were also found possessing Kisan Vikas Patras amounting to Rs 2.17 crores, numerous branded watches valued to Rs. 5 lakh and shares, fixed deposits worth Rs. 20 Lakh.

The Special Court ordered the forfeiture of the Kisan Vikas Patras and the branded watches and imposed a fine of Rs. 1.50 lakh on the flat at Ahmedabad. Mr Purwar had served at many places which included Mumbai and Ahmedabad as Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of Income Tax.
