BMC officials will have their work cut out

Mumbai: The deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) of each zone and the assistant municipal commissioner (AMC) of each ward will now be responsible for conducting surprise checks on establishments against whom the BMC has taken action for flouting norms.

“It was found that in several cases, unauthorised structures would be rebuilt even after action was taken. This is to ensure compliance,” Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta said on Monday. The DMCs will be given 1% of the establishments, while the AMCs will check 5% every month. Establishments will be randomly chosen from the removal of encroachment tracking management system, a database of the establishments inspected by the BMC.

“It is not humanly possible to conduct checks at every location and hence we have assigned a fixed percentage,” Mr. Mehta said. He also said that if it was found that a large number of establishments continued to flout the BMC norms despite action, then ward-level officials will be taken to task.
