The Kalachowky police on Tuesday arrested a 32-year-old woman for allegedly poisoning her two children and then consuming the poison herself in a fit of anger in December last year. While both her children died while undergoing treatment in the first week of January, the woman survived and was arrested.
Sushma Chile, her daughter Tanuja (14) and her son Anuj (9), were admitted to KEM Hospital with severe health complications on December 29. The Kalachowky police initiated inquiries after hospital authorities said it was a possible case of poisoning.
“Earlier last month, we received the post-mortem reports of Anuj and Tanuja, which confirmed that they had died of poisoning. We then questioned Sushma and she confessed to the crime,” said Senior Police Inspector Dilip Ugale of Kalachowky police station.

Sushma told the police that she had a bad temper and that her children’s disobedience and refusal to study caused her to flare up.
On December 29, when Anuj and Tanuja went out to play soon after returning from school instead of completing their homework, Sushma flew into a rage. When the kids came home after playing, she gave them glasses of a soft drink mixed with rat poison, and then consumed it herself, the police said.
When her husband, Sanjay, returned home from work he saw all three of them lying on the ground and rushed them to the hospital.

“Following Sushma’s confession, we registered a case of murder and causing hurt by means of poisoning under the Indian Penal Code on January 26, and arrested her on Tuesday. She was produced in court and has been remanded in judicial custody,” said Mr. Ugale.
