Mumbai: The Dongri police on Monday rescued a 22-year-old man and arrested three people in connection with the kidnapping. One more accused is at large.

According to the police, Mofijun Mondal (22) is a resident of Dongri and assists his family in their vegetable import-export business. Mondal had gone missing on February 3, and his family had subsequently received ransom calls, after which they approached the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Manoj Kumar Sharma said when they enquired about Mondal’s friends, they found that he was frequently seen in the company of one Samiullah Sheikh, who works in the same area and had recently befriended Mondal.

“We tracked Sheikh’s movements and it led us to Mondal, who was being held captive in a rented room in Dharavi. He was tied and gagged when we found him,” said Mr. Sharma.

The police arrested Sheikh and his two accomplices, identified as Shahenshah Rayyaan (19) and Firoz Rayyaan (19).

“On February 3, Sheikh invited Mondal to have a meal with him and offered him a spiked drink. When he lost consciousness, the accused took him to Dharavi, after which they started calling his brother and demanded ₹seven lakh as ransom,” said Mr. Sharma.
