The Samajwadi Party on Friday criticised a civic directive to enforce yoga in the daily school curriculum issued in July, a month before the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation actually gave its sanction to the order.

The party’s Maharashtra chief Abu Azmi met BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Friday. Mr. Azmi said, “We have demanded that the BMC official who issued the circular be suspended.” The party has issued a legal notice to Mr. Mehta asking him to make yoga optional within seven days.

Deputy municipal commissioner (Education) Ranjit Dhakne said, “I will have to take a look at the circular to understand how the education officer has articulated himself.” A senior BMC official on condition of anonymity said, “The BMC house cleared the proposal only last week. This is a case of overzealous behaviour exhibited by administrative officials to curry favour with their political masters.”
