Leptospirosis claimed a Kandivli resident’s life last week, the sixth death due to the disease in Mumbai since July 1.
The city has already recorded 45 cases of leptospirosis this month, but as many as 299 people are suspected to be suffering from it, according to the health bulletin the civic body released on Monday.
Of the six deaths due to leptospirosis, four were reported in July. The latest casualty was of an autorickshsaw driver, a resident of Vaibhav Nagar in Janupada, Kandivili (East). He was admitted to New Lifeline Nursing Home from August 16 to 18, when he was found to be diabetic and was treated with insulin. His condition deteriorated and was moved to Kasturba Hospital with high-grade fever, chest pain and breathlessness. He died on August 19 at 11:35 a.m.

Following his death, the civic body conducted a rapid house-to-house survey to identify more fever cases. Over 650 houses were surveyed and nearly 3,000 people screened. Mumbai has also recorded 994 suspected dengue cases this month, of which 69 are confirmed cases. But unlike last year, no H1N1 cases have been recorded in Mumbai so far.
