Three hurt in CNG blast at petrol pump in Kandivali

According to fire officials, there was no fire and prima facie the blast seems to have occurred due to excess pressure.

Three people were injured after the CNG cylinder of an autorickshaw exploded while being filled at a petrol pump in Kandivali on Saturday. The police said the incident occurred around 8 a.m. at a Hindustan Petroleum petrol pump near Milaap Talkies on S.V Road.

According to the Kandivali police, the injured men, Anil Shivram More (57), Sohail Sheikh (57) and Shailesh Tiwari (25), were taken to Tunga Hospital by residents before the fire brigade arrived. Fire brigade officials said there was no fire and the blast seems to have occurred due to excess pressure while filling the CNG.

Mahanagar Gas Limited said in a statement, “There was an incident of cylinder blast in an autorickshaw at Kapadia Brothers CNG filling station… CNG filling at the outlet is currently suspended and investigations for the cause of incident is being done by CCOE.”

Thampi Kurien, general secretary of the Mumbai Rickshawmen’s Union, said the union wants an investigation into the manufacturer of the CNG cylinder. “If it turns out to be a manufacturing defect, we will demand a complete recall of autorickshaws that have this type of cylinder. The autorickshaw was only registered in 2017, and the cylinder validity was till 2020,” he said.

A police officer said no FIR has been registered yet.
