According to the LT Marg police, the three-member police team, led by police inspector Jitendra Kadam, was manning a nakabandi near Mafatlal Bath Junction on Marine Drive when they saw the accused walking towards them with a chopper in his hand. The accused has been identified as Karun Nayar, a resident of Silver Oaks Society in Breach Candy.

An officer said, “Mr. Nayar seems to not have noticed the nakabandi till he came closer, then he turned and ran. Our team gave chase and managed to catch up with him. Then he assaulted them with the chopper. All three personnel sustained injuries in the attack.” The three policemen managed to overpower Mr. Nayar and disarm him. He was then taken to LT Marg police station for further inquiries.

The officer said, “We contacted the accused’s mother and she told us that Mr. Nayar has been addicted to narcotics for the last one year. She said her son also assaulted her due to his drug habit. She later visited the police station and confirmed that the chopper belonged her son, who used it to cut sticks as part of his work.”

However, the accused and his mother were not able to explain why he was out in the middle of the night. “We suspect it might have been a result of his erratic behaviour arising from his addiction,” the officer said.

Mr. Nayar was arrested after he underwent a medical check-up. The three injured policemen received treatment and are out of danger.

Sangramsinh Nishandar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I), said, “We have arrested the accused and charged him with attempt to murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty under sections of the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Arms Act.”
