The Powai police on Tuesday arrested two accused for allegedly stabbing a security guard to death and dumping his body in the Powai lake following an argument over illegal fishing in the lake.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Tabrez Khan (28) and Sakeen Siddiqui (23), are history sheeters and have several cases registered against them with the Powai police.
The police said that on Monday night, the duo got into an argument with some security guards employed by the Maharashtra Angling Association to prevent illegal fishing in the lake. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vinayak Deshmukh, Zone X, said, “There have been instances of some people laying fishing nets in the lake at night and taking away the catch in the morning, and the association had heightened security at the lake recently, deploying four security guards. They were tasked with destroying fishing nets in the lake.”

The accused allegedly took the four guards towards the middle of the lake on two small boats purportedly to show them other fishing nets laid out and accused them of singling out their net. When the boats reached the middle of the lake, the accused attacked the guards with daggers and stabbed one of the guards, Sohaib Khan (50), and threw his body overboard.
Mr. Deshmukh said, “The accused destroyed the engine of one boat and went back in the other while holding the other guards at knifepoint. They then took away the guards’ cell phones and fled.” Khan’s body was recovered on Tuesday. The accused have been charged with murder and robbery under the IPC. They will be producing in court on Wednesday.
