The State Home Department has approved a proposal to install 1,700 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Navi Mumbai.

A joint survey conducted by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, the City and Industrial Development Corporation and the traffic police has identified 500 locations where the cameras will be installed. The places include schools, gardens, bus depots, traffic junctions and libraries.

Belapur constituency MLA Manda Mhatre, who followed up on the proposal, said: “In many crimes, CCTV camera footage has played a vital role in nabbing the culprits. The cameras also help prevent untoward incidents.”
