Ten construction workers were injured after a water storage tank burst in a labour camp in Powai on Saturday morning. Civic officials said that the incident took place at a construction site near the Hiranandani Garden in Powai at around 7.15 a.m. on Saturday.

According to the victims, the tank was located at a height of around five feet from ground level and was made out of brick and mortar by the labourers last week. The labourers said that the tank burst open suddenly and the 10 labourers were trapped beneath the debris. Seven labourers are severely injured.

“We were getting ready and some were going to take a bath when suddenly the tank burst and the bricks fell on us. I have a fracture on my left leg and bruises in many places,” said Bhuleshwar Sahni (45), who is admitted to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. The seven seriously injured labourers were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. Six of them were admitted at the hospital, while one of them, Motilal Sahani, was referred to Sion Hospital for treatment.

Dr. Amit Rane, who attended to Sahni at Rajawadi Hospital, said, “He was severely injured. The tissues in his groin area and legs were torn. So I administered stitches on an emergency basis because we did not have the necessary facilities. We urgently transferred him to Sion Hospital. The six other labourers are stable.”

Meanwhile, three labourers, who had suffered minor injuries, were taken to Hiranandani Hospital. Powai police and the Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation despatched teams to the spot to conduct inquiries.

The police registered an offence of causing injury by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others under sections of the Indian Penal Code.
