One person died and another was critically injured after a concrete slab from a foot overbridge at the Baruipur railway station in South 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal fell on them on Friday night. Eastern Railway authorities have initiated a probe into the incident.

Ashima Pramanik, 42, a resident of the Madarhat area of Baruipur, suffered serious head injuries when the concrete slab fell on her. She was rushed to the Baruipur Sub Division Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries soon after. Another person, Chabi Pramanik, 60, is undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

According to the deceased’s daughter, Mousumi Pramanik, the incident took place when she and her mother were heading towards a platform.

She alleged that the Eastern Railway authorities were responsible for the incident as they did not maintain the bridge properly. Locals also made similar allegations and said that several sections of the bridge had developed cracks.

“A Bridge Inspector and Inspector of Work have been suspended,” Eastern Railway spokesperson R.N. Mahapatra said.
