A racket based in West Bengal and Bihar allegedly dupes tourists

A city court remanded on Saturday two persons charged with the gang rape of a Japanese tourist near Bodh Gaya in Bihar last November in judicial custody till January 9.

Javed Khan and Sajid Khan, brothers, were arrested on Friday from Bihar and brought to the city on transit remand.

The city police sought judicial custody as they wanted to conduct a test identification parade of the accused at the earliest. Senior officials of the Kolkata Police said the rape survivor was keen on returning to her country.

Five persons, who are part of an inter-State racket operating in Kolkata and Bihar that duped Japanese tourists, have been arrested by the Kolkata police.

Three others — Sabir Khan, Wasim Khan and Shahid Iqbal — were arrested from Kolkata on December 31 and are in police custody till January 6.

Pallab Kanti Ghosh, Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Crime), said that the gang members were fluent in Japanese. Some of them had married Japanese women and settled in Kolkata.

The complaint was made to the Kolkata Police through the Japanese Consulate on December 26, nearly a month after the incident.

The tourist was at Digha in Bihar’s Paschim Medinipur district for local sightseeing.

There, she woman was duped of Rs 76,000 and molested, police said.

“She was then forced on a bus to Bodh Gaya. Two persons allegedly gang-raped her at Fattepur, about 45 km from Bodh Gaya in Bihar. The incident occurred between November 23 and November 24,” Mr. Ghosh said.

The police said that the gang operating out of central Kolkata had duped other tourists in the past.

A special team, including members of the Women’s Grievances Cell and the Bank Fraud Cell, was formed to crack the case.
