With the Supreme Court on Tuesday asking to maintain a status quo in regard to polling in seven municipal bodies of the State, the West Bengal State Election has decided to keep the election process in abeyance.
The State Election Commission had decided to issue notification for polls on May 20 and the elections were scheduled on June 14. However, the Commission officials said that they will not go ahead with the schedule in the wake of developments in the Supreme Court.
A meeting of district and police officials scheduled during the day was also cancelled. State Election Commissioner S. R. Upadhyaya however refused to make any comments.

The opposition is alleging that the State government does not want to hold polls in seven civic bodies - Asansol Municipal Corporation, Kulti Municipality, Raniganj Municipality, Jamuria Municipality, Bidhannagar Municipality, Rajarhat — Gopalpur Municipality and Bally Municipality as the ruling party is on a weak ground.
