Three dead in Kolkata building collapse

An old building collapsed in central Kolkata’s Burrabazar area in Kolkata.

An elderly man was killed and two other family members who sustained injuries succumbed to injuries when a portion of an old building collapsed in central Kolkata’s Burrabazar area on Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Taraprasanna Saha, 91. Two women, Sovarani Saha (70) and Beauty Roy (52), who were inside the building when the roof came crashing down were admitted to Calcutta Medical College.

One person was stranded inside the house and was rescued by fire fighters and members of disaster management group.

“This is G + 2 building. There was a temporary structure made of tin on the roofwhich came crashing down with the roof,” an official of the State Fire Department said. The building is in a dilapidated state.

According to officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation ( KMC) the building was declared unsafe but the tenants refused to move.
