Mayor’s niece lashes out on Twitter

May 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:55 am IST - KOLKATA:

A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee defended Kolkata Mayor’s niece Debapriya Chatterjee after she was accused of assaulting a traffic police constable on duty, Ms. Chatterjee took to social media to threaten that she would ‘run over’ a person who criticised her and then ultimately deleted her account when she was flooded with brickbats. Taking to Twitter to lash out at people criticising her for allegedly dropping her uncle’s name when a traffic cop wanted to seize her driving license for hitting a pedestrian with her Tata Nano on Friday night, Ms. Chatterjee aggressively defended herself, occasionally peppering her replies with profanities.

Maintaining that the media was ‘misquoting’ her Twitter handle @chattydebby, Ms. Chatterjee told The Hindu that she had tried her best to reply to everyone.

“I made an effort to not block anyone who had something to say to me. Despite that only some of my tweets were being reproduced and I was being misquoted which is why I had to delete my account,” she said.

Reacting to a user who asked her if people should be careful of her and if she would be a threat to pedestrians, she replied: “Yes please, if I see you I’ll surely run you over.” When a user ridiculed her on her driving skills, she replied with: “Yes, now go kill yourself.” She also got into lengthy verbal spats with other users and appeared unapologetic when others pointed out that she had violated the law.
