Many graduates from the city and elsewhere in West Bengal are being forced to pursue the company secretary (CS) course in other States because of lack of local job openings, Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) president Mamta Binani said.
“Many students are leaving the State after completing their graduation here. They are enrolling into the CS course in other States,” Ms. Binani said at a press meet here on Saturday.
She singled out poor employment scenario in Bengal for the current state of affairs.

Nearly 46,000 students from the eastern region are enrolled in the CS course, the lowest among all regions. The all-India figure is 3.83 lakh.
“The geography of the eastern region was the smallest among the four regions. This is another reason why the number of students here is less,” Ms. Binani said.
Students pursuing CS in the State also find it hard to get on-the-job training, which is part of the curriculum, she explained.

There has been a rise in demand for the CS course, with the government laying more focus on corporate governance, Ms. Binani added.
Eastern India is slated to get two Benches of the National Company Law Tribunal, one each in Kolkata and Guwahati. The tribunal will replace the existing Company Law Board. - PTI
