West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must also work towards providing relief to those displaced due to political clashes in Bengal, said CPI(M) leaders here on Sunday at a public meeting to express solidarity with those affected in the violent attacks in Kokrajhar in Assam.
Talking at the meeting, organised by Save the Democracy Forum and West Bengal State Disabled Committee, former Kolkata Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said while Ms. Banerjee was performing her ‘Constitutional duty’ by lending a helping hand to those who were forced to flee their homes in Assam, she should also work for those displaced due to political clashes in her own State.
Ms. Banerjee visited north Bengal on Friday to review the assistance being provided by the district administration to the people who have fled Assam in the wake of the violence unleashed by the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) and taken shelter in relief camps in Alipurduar district.
Bengal is witness to several political clashes, forcing many people to flee their homes and seek refuge elsewhere or change their political affiliations.
However, there have been reports of some cadres and leaders returning to their villages in recent weeks.
