The CPI(M) has denied any ‘adjustment’ with the BJP in Bengal for the panchayat elections scheduled for May 14.

“The news of adjustment between the CPI(M) and the BJP in Nadia is totally false and misleading,” Nadia CPI(M) district secretary Sumit Dey said on Monday.

The CPI (M), at the State level, circulated his statement because the rumour of a joint rally with the BJP surfaced at Ranaghat in Nadia district of south Bengal.

It was widely reported earlier that Ranaghat CPI(M) MLA Rama Biswas participated in a rally where the BJP cadre and local leaders were present.

Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee too claimed that they were ‘aware’ of similar understanding between the Left and the Right ‘in various districts’.

Accusing the BJP of spreading rumours, Mr. Dey said his party has nothing to do with Independent candidates who have entered into “adjustment” with the BJP.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury tweeted that “motivated rumours, canards and lies are being spread by the TMC which has a deal with the BJP on communal polarisation”.

He also stated that Left Front chairperson Biman Basu has “denied any understanding with the BJP” and that his party was firm in its “opposition to both the TMC and the BJP”.
