Check infiltration from Bangladesh: Governor

Nationals from bordering country arrested for rape

Two days after the arrest of Bangladeshi nationals in connection with alleged rape of an elderly nun at a convent in Nadia district, West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Saturday expressed concern over illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.

“This is a very serious problem... And the Centre and the State government must jointly look into it and take measures to stop infiltration of Bangladeshis,” Mr. Tripathi told reporters on the sidelines of a programme.

The State’s Criminal Investigation Department earlier this week arrested Mohammad Salim Sheikh from Mumbai and Gopal Sarkar from Habra in North 24 Parganas district. According to CID, both are Bangladeshi nationals.

Only a few months ago, an inter-Sate racket of alleged operatives of Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was unearthed in the State by the National Investigation Agency following an accidental blast at a rented house at Khargragarh in Bardhaman district in October 2014.

The Governor in his address to the State Assembly earlier this year had requested the forces manning the borders to heighten vigil along the international border so that “entry of undesirable elements does not occur”.

“Two or three things have come out from the Ranaghat incident which relates to Bangladeshi infiltration. The BJP has always campaigned that Bangladeshi infiltration must be stopped. Our charge has been vindicated,” BJP national secretary and in charge of West Bengal Siddarth Nath Singh said.
