The Centre on Friday turned down the West Bengal government’s request for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the gang rape of a 71-year-old nun in Nadia on March 14.

“We examined the request from the State government, which has been rejected. The decision has been communicated to them,” said a senior government official refusing to divulge the grounds of rejection.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on March 19 announced that she recommended a CBI probe considering the seriousness of the case. The Union government’s decision comes a day after the second suspect in the case was arrested.
