Bengali TV actress commits suicide

Well known television actor Disha Ganguly allegedly committed suicide at her south Kolkata residence on Thursday. Ms. Ganguly, in her early twenties, has featured in many popular Bengali TV serials.

In a separate incident, another actor, reportedly a close friend of Ms. Ganguly, attempted suicide. She is in a “state of shock,” the police said.

The media coverage of the incidents has sparked a controversy. Sappho for Equality, an organisation working for sexually marginalised women, has objected to what it called unsubstantiated media reports linking the two incidents. The women had never acknowledged that they were in a relationship, so the reports “infringed” on their personal space, it said.
