Sambia Sohrab is the younger son of former Rashtriya Janta Dal MLA Mohd. Sohrab.

Three days after a 21-year-old IAF man lost his life after being run over by a speeding car while supervising the preparations of the Republic Day Parade, the Kolkata Police late on Saturday arrested Sambia Sohrab, the main accused in the hit-and- run case.

“Yes, we have arrested Sambia Sohrab,” Debasish Boral Special Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police told The Hindu . The accused was arrested from the residence of his in-laws under Karaya Police station area of the city.

Only hours before the arrest Mr. Boral claimed that its was not his elder brother Ambia Sohrab but Sambia Sohrab who was driving the Audi Q7 in the early hours of Wednesday that killed the IAF man on Red Road.

“It is more or less confirmed ( that) Sambia was driving the car," the police officer said. Sambia Sohrab is the younger son of former Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) MLA Mohd. Sohrab, a prominent businessman who has a number of hotels and real estate projects. The politician father and both the sons had gone missing since Wednesday morning.

Though after 2011, Mr. Mohd. Sohrab had shifted his loyalities to the ruling Trinamool Congress, the party early on Saturday issued a detailed statement claiming that neither Mr. Mohd. Sohrab nor his sons have anything to do with the party.

"We have nothing to do with them and have never had anything to do with them,” a statement issued by the party said.
