53 per cent women in Left’s list for Kolkata civic polls

: The Left Front announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections here on Sunday. Out of the 144 wards of KMC, candidates for 125 wards were announced. More than 53 per cent of the candidates fielded by the Left Front are women. Earlier, in its list of candidates, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) had fielded more than 45 per cent women candidates in 144 wards of the KMC. TMC had fielded 66 women candidates.

“In the first list, there are 67 women candidates. In the next list of candidates, at least four women candidates will be included taking the minimum number of women candidates to 71,” Left Front chairperson Biman Basu told journalists.

Mr. Basu also said that the out of the 125 candidates, 23 belong to minority communities.

Asked whether the Left Front had decided whom to field as Mayoral candidates, Mr. Basu said that the issue had not been discussed yet.

Mr. Basu urged Left Front workers to go all out for the KMC polls and start campaigning with a “come what may” attitude.
