Youth threatens to jump from cell tower opposite US consulate in Chennai

The young man said he’d jump if Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswamy and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam did not resign immediately.

A youth climbed a cell phone tower located opposite the U.S. Consulate in Chennai on Saturday morning and threatened to jump if his demands including resignation of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswamy, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam were not met immediately.

He also wanted BJP state unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan to resign.

Joint Commissioner of Police Anbu and other top police officials rushed to the spot and chalked out a plan of action.

Four personnel of Fire and Rescue Service climbed on to the tower and held talks with the young man to bring him down. After nearly an hour, he was convinced to come down. The police bundled him off in their vehicle as soon as he was brought down.

He has been identified as R. Ravichandran who is a ‘serial protestor,’ police sources said. Among his other demands, were the rollback of sugar price hike in PDS outlets, the closed Tasmac shops should not be reopened and local body polls should be conducted immediately.

Traffic went out of gear on Anna Salai, Cathedral Road, Uthamar Gandhi Salai as most of motorists attempted to stop their vehicles and witness the drama.
