The Chennai Corporation will soon commence work on the remaining portion of the compound wall around the Perungudi dumping yard, to prevent trespassers from setting fire to garbage there. As part of measures taken to study the cause of several fires that have broken out in dumping yards of late, the civic body is also likely to commence work on the installation of surveillance cameras in the Perungudi yard next week. Chennai Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan had announced the installation of the surveillance cameras a few days ago.
In the wake of the Madras High Court directive on Friday to the Chennai Corporation to take measures to stop fires in the garbage dump yard on the fringes of Pallikaranai marshland, civic body officials have now planned to expedite work on the construction of the wall.
Last Saturday, a fire had broken out at the Pallikaranai dumping yard, and thick smoke emanating from it had engulfed many residential areas.

As a chunk of the Pallikaranai marsh has been handed over to the Forest Department and the process of handing over more parts of the marshland is under way, the Corporation has intensified its focus on constructing a wall around the Perungudi dumping yard, which is also part of the marsh.
The civic body will also commence work on remediation and the scientific closure of Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards in a few months. The decision to commence remediation work was made in the wake of the National Green Tribunal setting aside the environmental clearance granted by the Tamil Nadu government to the integrated solid waste management facility at Perungudi a few months ago.
The civic body generates over 4,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste on a daily basis at present, and has 10 dumping sites across a 426 sq km area.
