Southern Railway waiting for maps from Tangedco to relocate power cables

Crying for attention: A view of the dilapidated Elephant Gate Bridge near Salt Cotaurs.

The Southern Railway is waiting for the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to come up with an area map for shifting the high tension underground power lines before it can go ahead with demolishing the dilapidated Elephant Gate bridge.

Joint inspection

The proposal for identifying the places to shift the underground power lines comes in the wake of the two Central and State government organisations undertaking a joint inspection of the bridge located between Wall Tax Road and Pulianthope High Road on October 23. The Chennai Division of Southern Railway had proposed to demolish the old Elephant Gate bridge located near the closed Salt Cotaurs for constructing a new and wider bridge. However, the demolition plan could not be taken up because of the presence of high tension power cables passing through the bridge.

A senior Tangedco official said a joint inspection was carried out with officials of Southern Railway on October 23. He added that the railway authorities had asked them to identify places for installing three towers in order to relocate the underground power cables as overhead cables. A senior official of Southern Railway said they had asked Tangedco officials to come out with a site plan after the joint inspection to take the talks forward.
