Burglars gained entry into a watch showroom on Gandhi Nagar 1 Main Road in Adyar early on Friday morning and fled with wrist watches worth over Rs. 30 lakh and Rs. 50,000 in cash.

The culprits reportedly entered the showroom by bending the shutter even as the two locks were left intact.

Adyar police officials said the burglary took place around 2 a.m. on the main road.

The showroom had been closed after business around 10 p.m. on Thursday and the burglary came to light when the employees opened the showroom on Friday morning.

“The burglars did not break the locks but bent the shutter in such a way that one person could enter with some effort. However, scientific and fingerprints experts who examined the crime scene have not confirmed the possibility yet. Further investigations are under way,” said a senior officer.

The showroom is said to have stocked watches and clocks worth nearly Rs. 1.50 crore and the most expensive ones were placed in a locker every night before the showroom was shut.

“Watches in four racks of display, which were suspected to be worth over Rs. 30 lakh and the cash placed in the cashbox, were missing. We are also considering the possibility that the burglars may have used keys, perhaps duplicate ones, to open and then close the shutter,” the officer added.

Adyar police have registered a case following a complaint lodged by a representative of the showroom.
