Varsities debate UGC regulations

Heads of many deemed universities met in the city on Tuesday to discuss UGC regulations and their implications.

The regulations infringed on the universities’ right to make decisions, they said.

VIT University chancellor Dr G. Viswanathan urged the Union government to withdraw UGC Regulations for Deemed Universities 2010.

It was detrimental to the university system, he said, adding that the guideline was a retrograde step that interfered with the autonomy and freedom of deemed universities in the country.

“If UGC wants to enforce the guideline, they can do so for institutions begun after 2010 and not for the older ones. No rule can be enforced in a retrospective way”, he said.

Pointing out that deemed universities all over India had approached the country’s high courts, which had stayed the guideline, he said it was time for UGC to review its regulations and withdraw them.

Officials from institutions that are part of the Educational Promotion Society of India (EPSI) participated in the event.
