UK couple kidnap case: Scotland Yard comes calling

Met city police commissioner and his team; to stay till Thursday to carry out further investigations

Officers of the London’s Metropolitan Police Force, the Scotland Yard, met city police commissioner S. George on Tuesday in connection with the kidnap for ransom case of a United Kingdom-based couple last May.

The couple was rescued by city police and 13 persons were arrested while two men were apprehended by the Scotland Yard in UK for plotting the crime.

According to city police sources, officers Craig Maggee and Mark Hughes of the Kidnapping and Special Investigation Unit of the Scotland Yard met Mr. George and his colleagues and collected documents pertaining to the abduction of Thavaraja (59) and his wife Salaja (55) on May 29, 2013, from outside Chennai airport.

The officers gathered evidence towards the prosecution of two suspects arrested in the UK.

A gang kidnapped the couple and demanded the equivalent of Rs. 2.48 crore in British pound sterling from the victim’s daughter living in the UK.

Following an alert by the British High Commission here, a city police formed a team and nabbed the gang within a few days and rescued the couple from Mandharakuppam near Puducherry in June last year, a week after the kidnap.

The British police are expected to carry out investigations till Thursday and gather further evidence for the case, sources said.
