A two-year-old girl died on Tuesday when a picture-tube TV fell on her after she pulled the stand holding the set at her home in Perungudi.
According to the Thoraipakkam police, the victim Sanjana was the only daughter of couple Kamaladas, a construction worker, and Sridevi. The accident took place around 7.30 p.m. on Monday when the child was playing in their one-room house. Kamaladas was speaking with an acquaintance outside the house while Sridevi was engaged in cooking.
The TV set was placed on a two-foot-high stand in the centre of the room. Sanjana pulled the stand, resulting in the heavy TV set falling on her head. The girl suffered a severe head injury and was rushed to a nearby hospital from where she was referred to Government Children’s Hospital in Egmore. She was later shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (GH) for further treatment as she was in a critical condition. Around 5.30 a.m. on Tuesday she died after failing to respond to treatment, the police said.

Following a post-mortem at GH, Sanjana’s parents took her body to their native village in Tindivanam to perform the last rites.
A similar case of accidental death involving a child occurred on September 29, 2011, after a three-year-old boy pulled an electric wire of a TV at home resulting in the set falling on his head. The victim Kishore Balakrishnan was at his grandparents’ house in Pulianthope when the accident took place. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to head injuries. The Basin Bridge police had registered a case of unnatural death.
