Two youths, who were allegedly found indulging in bike racing near Guindy, were arrested by the traffic police on Tuesday night.

According to police sources, passers-by alerted the Police Control Room that four youths on two motorcycles were racing towards Guindy from Saidapet around 9 p.m. A special team led by Inspector (Traffic Investigation) G. Harikumar went to check.

By then, two youths had abandoned their motorcycle and escaped from the scene. Angry pedestrians damaged the vehicle. The other two, identified as Santosh Kumar (20) of St.Thomas Mount and Ram (19) of Ramavaram, hit the parapet wall of a flyover and fell on the road. Police arrested the accused and seized the vehicles.

Santosh Kumar, a second year ITI student, initially pretended to be innocent and claimed that he was only an onlooker . “An in-depth investigation was done to ascertain the ownership of the motorcycle he rode. We proved with documents that the vehicle was in his possession though it was sold to many people earlier,” Mr. Harikumar said.

Santosh Kumar and Ram were produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. “The Police Commissioner has given clear instructions that firm action be taken against those indulging in racing on roads. The accused persons in this case rode in a rash and negligent manner endangering the lives of innocent people on the road,” he added.

The team is on the lookout for two others, who abandoned their motorcycles and escaped.
