Two burglars who struck at houses left unlocked in Triplicane and adjoining areas were arrested by a special police team on Wednesday morning. Laptops, mobile phones and gold jewellery were recovered from the duo.
Police said the suspects, Ezhil Kaviyarasu (24) of Ayodhya Nagar and Kamal (27) of Neelam Basha Darga Street, both in Triplicane, were apprehended after the investigating team tracked them using a mobile phone they had stolen from a house in Oviyar Street, Triplicane.
“The burglars are drug addicts and sleep on the sands of the Marina. Usually, at about 2 a.m., they go around Triplicane to check for houses that have been left unlocked. In most cases, they slip into bachelor’s homes and flee with laptops and mobile phones,” said T. Sivarajan, Inspector of Police, Zam Bazaar.
Following complaints about several burglaries in Triplicane and adjoining areas, a special team under S. Senthil Kumaran, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Triplicane probed and tracked down Ezhil and Kamal after the duo gave a mobile phone they had stolen to a resident of Nadukuppam in Ice House.
“We tracked many people one after another, and were finally led to the burglars. They had sold the stolen laptops and mobile phones and had buried the jewellery on the banks of the Cooum River near the Chepauk MRTS station,” Mr. Sivarajan added.
Gold jewellery weighing 20 sovereigns, four mobile phones and three laptops were seized from the men. They were remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison on Wednesday evening.
