List of bus route roads to be concretised given to traffic police

The Corporation has finalised an action plan for development of concrete bus route roads in the city.

At a meeting organised at Ripon Buildings on Tuesday, the civic body decided to divert traffic on 300-metre stretches on each of the bus route roads to be concretised.

The Chennai Corporation submitted the list of roads to the police to plan traffic diversions during the implementation of the work. Representatives of the traffic police, BSNL, Metrowater and Tangedco were present at the meeting.

Peters Road, Swami Sivananda Salai, Velachery Main Road, Sterling Road, Valluvar Kottam High Road, New Avadi Road, Purasawalkam High Road, Kathivakkam High Road, Tiruvottiyur High Road, Tondiarpet High Road, Greams Road and Walajah Road are among the 66 roads on the Chennai Corporation’s list for concrete bus routes in the first phase.

Estimates for concretisation of a total length of 41.39 km have already been prepared for Rs. 78.22 crore. A total of 66 bus routes covering 50 km will be developed in this phase, connecting zones such as Adyar, Teynampet, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Anna Nagar, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar and Kodambakkam.

After officials of BSNL rejected the provision for same ducts to carry cables for power supply and telecommunications, the civic body decided to have two separate ducts on the stretches.

“The agencies will submit a list of roads that require shifting of utilities on Monday. Bids will be floated by January 21,” said an official of the Chennai Corporation.

“After the commencement of work with M60 concrete, hard barricades will be erected for diverting traffic. The traffic flow will be restored in 48 hours. The width of roads identified, range from 15 to 10 metres,” the official said.

A lesser grade of concrete (M40) is being used to develop 18,000 interior roads. The concrete roads will last for more than 30 years.

“The 66 concrete stretches will be ready before the Lok Sabha elections. In the future, for road cuts, residents will have to pay a separate agency that will also restore the roads after the work is completed,” said an official.
