Three postal divisions — Puducherry, Tambaram and Chennai City North — bagged ‘Revenue Generation Award’ at a function organised by the Chennai City Region, Department of Posts, in the city on Tuesday. The recognition was part of the Regional Excellence Awards given to postal divisions, post offices and officials who contributed to the growth of the department. Last year, revenue of the Chennai City postal region rose to ₹252 crore in 2018-19 from ₹186.6 crore during the previous fiscal. This is 35% more than the previous year. The postal divisions in Puducherry, Tambaram and Chennai North had significantly contributed to the revenue growth of the department.
Of the 55 awards given in 17 categories, 21 were presented to the postal divisions and post offices, 34 were individual awards in recognition of their performance. The post office savings bank accounts too have increased from 55.76 lakh accounts to 58.96 lakh accounts this fiscal.
Post offices in Mylapore, T. Nagar and Vellore were chosen as top performing head offices. While Alok Ojha, senior superintendent of post offices, was awarded for top performance in ‘My Stamp’ concept for corporate sector and Swachh Bharat initiatives, Akhil Ramachandran Nair (Puducherry division), L. Chandrasekaran ( Tiruvannamalai) and S. Ranganathan (Chennai City South), bagged the best performing divisional heads awards. The Chennai region has witnessed increase in transactions of services such as Aadhaar enrolment and passport service kendras in 2018-19. Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam gave away the awards. M. Sampath, Chief Postmaster General and R. Anand, Postmaster General, took part.
