Even before the cadaver transplant programme of Tamil Nadu completed its fifth year, the number of donors this year has crossed the 100 mark.
From October 1, 2012 till date, there have been 101 donors — a record for the State. The programme was launched in 2008 and there have been 288 donors in the last four years. “The lives of more than 300 critically ill organ failure patients have been saved through major organ transplants such as heart, lung, liver and kidneys apart from corneas and heart valves,” said J. Amalorpavanathan, convenor of the programme.
No other State has touched even half this number, he said, adding that it is likely to exceed 110 donors by the end of the fifth year on September 30.

“The number of transplants as on Tuesday is 101 with two donors at Christian Medical College, Vellore. For the last six months, there have been more than 12 donors per month on an average,” C.E. Karunakaran, trustee, National Network for Organ Sharing said.
