Sultry afternoon, sudden showers and slushy roads

A sultry afternoon preceded heavy rain in the city in the evening. Though the rain lasted only for around half an hour, it left puddles on several roads.

According to meteorological officials, Nungambakkam received 5.4 mm of rain and Meenambakkam recorded 9.9 mm. The officials further said that there is possibility of rain or thunder shower in some areas during evening or night. The maximum temperature on Tuesday would be around 35 degree Celsius.

On Monday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum of 35.1 degree Celsius and minimum of 24.2 degrees. The humidity was 95 per cent.

The Meenambakkam observatory recorded a maximum of 35.5 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.3 degrees.

The humidity here was 92 per cent.

Unfinished drains

The unfinished stormwater drain work resulted in slushy roads in many places. The metal barricades placed in some streets where trenches have been dug for laying drains has considerably reduced space for pedestrians. Drivers park vehicles wherever they find space, forcing pedestrians to walk through slush.

Residents in Koyambedu said there was a power cut for half an hour during the rain.

Some pockets in the southern suburbs experienced heavy rain. Traffic came to a grinding halt in Chromepet. The Chromepet police station was submerged in sheets of water, which also entered the premises.

Every time the suburbs receive heavy rain, the station is marooned. The construction of culverts across the Grand Southern Trunk Road at Chromepet has not prevented flooding and vehicles moved at snail's pace across the stretch.

According to Chennai Traffic police, vehicle movement slowed down considerably in many arterial roads in southern suburbs, including Rajiv Gandhi Salai. Vehicles moved slowly along 100 ft Road, Second Avenue junction and Halda to Kathipara junction. Vehicles moving to and from Tambaram to Perungalathur were also affected, police said.
