Stop using riverbank for garbage transfer

March 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

The National Green Tribunal (NGT)-Southern Bench has directed the Chennai Corporation to find an alternative site for a garbage transit station instead of using the Cooum river bank in Nolambur.

NGT has given the civic body eight weeks to scout for space, failing which they will be prevented from dumping garbage along the waterway. The Bench has given the civic body temporary permission to use the Cooum river bed as a transit station till then.

Last October, NGT had restrained the Corporation from dumping garbage along the river bank in Nolambur.

The Corporation officials said they are finding it hard to find alternative sites in additional areas. “We are planning to fence the Cooum bank from Adyar to Maduravoyal to prevent dumping of garbage,” an official told the NGT Bench.
