The house surgeons of Government Stanley Hospital went on strike on Wednesday, demanding that the dean implement the instructions issued by the health department on the nature of work that they should be assigned.

For several weeks now, the junior doctors - compulsory rotational residential interns - have been protesting across the state demanding that they be allowed to learn to treat patients instead of being made to administer injections and carry samples to the lab.

According to the striking doctors, the heads of several other institutions had already issued instructions but the dean of Stanley Medical College had not done so.

Around 150 junior doctors gathered in front of the dean's office in the morning to press for their demand.
