Light rain may last for one or two days over districts in south Tamil Nadu. However, other parts of the State will experience largely dry weather for the rest of the week.
Chennai residents’ joy was short-lived as the cloud cover in the morning yielded just a drizzle in some areas. The weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded only a trace of rainfall as it was less than one mm.
N. Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, said a trough of low pressure over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka that persists at mean sea level was the reason behind the weather change. But, this is only temporary as some districts such as Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Sivaganga and Nagapattinam would have the possibility of mild rains on Tuesday. Places like Chennai would experience a cloudy sky and close to normal temperature, he said.

On Monday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8 degree Celsius and 30 degree Celsius, a close-to-normal. The same weather trend may continue for the next few days.
Nights to be warmer
However, nights would become warmer due to the increase in cloud cover.

On Monday, the city saw a jump in minimum temperature. Weather stations registered 25 degree Celsius, which is nearly three degree Celsius above normal.
“If the system was positioned at a height of three-four km, the weather system would have had a better impact on the region. But, it is now close to the surface level and hence brought only light rains,” said Mr. Puviarasan.
