Sewage overflow irks residents

Nethaji Nagar Main Road, which serves as a connecting road for Hasthinapuram and Nemilichery under Pallavaram Municipality, has been plagued by sewage overflows for the last one week. Residents of areas said sewage overflowed from manholes on the road and stagnated the entire stretches. This, they said, has led to breeding of mosquitoes.

Residents say they are also having to deal with an unbearable stench emanating from it.

The Hindu said workers from the municipality arrived after the election results were announced, but they were unable to identify and locate the block along in the sewer.

He pointed out that sewage from Old Hasthinapuram Main Road, Bharathi Street, VOC Street and Gandhi Street joined the main sewer lines on the road, which has choked them.

Residents of VOC Street pointed out that the sewage overflow was due to the size of the pipelines which could not handle the heavy flow of sewage from neighbouring areas.

Municipal Commissioner K. Sivakumar, however, said the workers had located the problem near Padavattamman Temple in one of the sewer mains and it would be dealt with in two days.
